Joshua Parker Green built this original Vermont farmhouse in 1871 on 120 acres at the confluence of Whitney Brook and Twenty Mile Stream. The Green family farmed this land until 1940 when a catastrophic fire destroyed the farm buildings and most of the animals. The family lived in their home until 1961. Typical of the times the Green's concentrated their farming on raising and maintaining dairy cattle and sheep, growing a few cash crops and the raising of various other animals to meet their personal needs.
Today, the house and attached outbuildings are basically the same configuration as they were in 1871. Most of the 120 acres during the 1800's and early 1900's were entirely open. Now it is 50% wooded. Several hundred acres including neighboring properties surrounded the house making it a private and quiet location. Whitney Brook, for which our B & B is named begins several miles away and passes next to the house emptying into Twenty Mile Stream.
During a lazy afternoon guest can use one of out many adirondack chairs for reading next to the brook or on the back lawn looking out over the meadow. One of out favorite resting-places is on the teak bench next to the lily and gold fish pools. For those inclined there are miles of open fields or wooded acres to explore. The sports-minded will find our area provides downhill and cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, biking, golfing, fishing, horseback riding and swimming all within 10 minutes. Extensive antiquing and specialty shopping abound in the area.
